Woman Unharmed After Suspect Opens Fire During Greenspoint Cellphone Theft
A suspect fired several shots at a woman who chased him after he snatched her cellphone near Rankin Road on Sunday; Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed she was unharmed and a suspect was detained.

Near the North Freeway and Rankin Road, a cellphone snatching on Sunday afternoon escalated into a shooting when the suspect reportedly opened fire on the woman who gave chase, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said. No one was struck.
According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, deputies were called to the area north of Greenspoint after a male suspect grabbed a woman's phone and fled on foot. She pursued him. The suspect then reportedly stopped, turned around, and fired several shots in her direction. Gonzalez confirmed no one was hit by the gunfire and the woman was uninjured.
Houston Police Department officers arrived on scene and detained the suspect, ending the confrontation near the North Freeway. What began as a street theft north of Greenspoint had turned into a shooting before HPD officers moved in.
Both HCSO deputies and HPD officers responded to the Rankin Road location, with the Harris County Sheriff's Office serving as the reporting agency and attributing all details to information gathered at the scene.

HCSO described the suspect as detained rather than arrested, a distinction that left open Sunday whether formal charges had been filed or whether he remained in custody. The identities of the woman and the suspect were not released, and it remained unclear whether the stolen cellphone was recovered.
No follow-up statement from either HCSO or HPD had been issued as of Sunday evening on the suspect's custody status or the investigation's next steps.
