Byron Donalds brought Florida’s governor’s race into the heart of Brooksville, where a Hernando County Republican Executive Committee meet-and-greet gave the congressman a packed local stage and a clear sign that Hernando Republicans expect to matter in 2026.

The Hernando GOP listed its “Hernando GOP Rock the Republic Gubernatorial Candidate Meet & Greet” for April 25, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Florida Cracker Bourbon Barn on East Jefferson Street. By putting the county party’s name on the event, organizers turned the stop into more than a routine campaign appearance. Hernando GOP describes its meetings as open to all registered Republicans, which helped frame the gathering as a party event built from local organizing rather than a one-off visit.

Donalds arrived in Hernando County already carrying the label of leading Republican contender for Florida governor, and the crowd response reflected that status. Attendees showed enthusiasm during the event and online afterward, including praise for a performance by Paul. The turnout gave the evening the feel of a real show of strength, with local Republicans using a Brooksville venue to signal that the county remains politically engaged and willing to help shape the statewide contest.

The stop also fit a broader pattern. Lt. Gov. Jay Collins spoke at the Timber Pines Republican Club on March 19, making Hernando County one of the more active local stops for Republicans seeking higher office in 2026. That matters in a county where state-level politics can quickly touch everyday concerns, from property insurance to growth to taxes.

It also landed against the backdrop of another major county issue: solid-waste service. Hernando County approved a new collection contract in 2025, with Coastal Waste and Recycling set to replace Republic Services in 2026 after Republic had serviced the county since the start of 2012. With the county already navigating that transition, a crowded GOP rally in Brooksville looked less like a ceremonial visit and more like a test of whether Hernando County will remain a meaningful base of support as the governor’s race intensifies.
