Fire Weather Watch in Hernando County Feb. 23; Outdoor Burning, Mowing Prohibited

The National Weather Service in Ruskin issued a Fire Weather Watch for Hernando County effective 9 AM EST Monday, Feb. 23 through Monday evening, warning that "critically low humidity with gusty winds will result in elevated fire danger" and that "Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended." The NWS message was timestamped 11:38 PM EST on Sunday, Feb. 22 and carries the coded product line /O.CON.KTBW.FW.A.0001.260223T1400Z-260224T0000Z/.

Hernando County Fire Rescue posted on Facebook that the US National Weather Service Tampa Bay Florida issued a Red Flag Warning for Hernando County for Sunday, Feb. 22 from 1 PM to 7 PM and that "A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Hernando County effective Monday 2/23/26." The post lists strict prohibitions including "DO NOT burn anything outdoors," "DO NOT mow your yard," and "DO NOT use tools in or near your yard that can create a spark or flame. [...] DO NOT throw cigarettes out your car window or discard them in the grass or brush." The post names Florida Forest Service - Withlacoochee Forestry Center and showed 101 reactions, 4 comments and 125 shares at the time of capture.

Forecasters cite northwest winds and low humidity as the key risk factors. The NWS Fire Weather message forecasts "WINDS...Northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph" and "RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 38 percent." Fox13news aggregated NWS alerts with an issuance time of 23:58 PM on Feb. 22 and included separate listings for Freeze Warning and Cold Weather Advisory products.

Regionally, the NWS also issued a Cold Weather Advisory late Sunday with a line that "Very cold wind chills as low as 29 expected" in coastal and nearby counties, and Fox13 and AccuWeather list a Freeze Warning for Tuesday morning from 3:00 AM to 9:00 AM on Feb. 24. Hernando County residents should note the overlap of dry, gusty conditions Monday and a sharp cool-down by Tuesday morning.
