Hernando County Man Sentenced Ten Years for Possession of Child Pornography
A Hernando County man was adjudicated guilty and sentenced to serve ten years in state prison plus ten years of sex offender probation after investigators recovered child sexual abuse material from his online account. The case underscores ongoing law enforcement efforts to remove exploitative material from circulation and the importance of community reporting to protect children.

On December 1, 2025, Jonathon Caleb Smith, born May 22, 1993, was adjudicated guilty on ten counts of Possession of Child Pornography and sentenced to ten years with the Florida Department of Corrections followed by ten years of sex offender probation. The sentence concludes a probe that began in early 2024 and involved cooperation across jurisdictions.
Hernando County Sheriff detectives first received information on February 8, 2024 about possible possession and distribution of child pornography. Investigators identified a possible suspect and obtained a search warrant for Smiths online accounts, which was served to his internet provider. The warrant yielded the contents of Smiths account, where detectives located twenty files of Child Sexual Abuse Material.
Detectives traveled to Smiths Spring Hill residence on March 14, 2024 to speak with him, but discovered he had recently relocated to North Carolina. County investigators coordinated with authorities there and arranged for his arrest. Smith was taken into custody and initially charged with twenty counts of Possession of Child Pornography, Unlawful Use of a Two Way Communication Device, and listed in custody with No Bond. He was later transported back to Hernando County to face prosecution.
The sentence and convictions reflect the Sheriff Office position of zero tolerance for possession of child sexual abuse material and represent a prosecutions outcome that will require Smith to register as a sex offender for the period specified by the court. For residents, the case highlights the role of digital evidence and internet service provider cooperation in criminal investigations, and the importance of reporting suspicious activity to assist law enforcement.
Community Relations Coordinator Jessica Burns issued the media release detailing the investigation and outcome and noted that Crime Stoppers remains a resource for residents to provide tips. The conviction serves as a reminder to the community that local and interagency investigations continue to address exploitation and prioritize child safety.
