Hernando County plans free July 4 celebration for America 250 at Sand Hill Scout Reservation
Hernando County is betting $150,000 on a free July 4 event at Sand Hill Scout Reservation, with fireworks, drones and vendors aimed at making America 250 pay off locally.

Hernando County is planning to spend about $150,000 on a free July 4 celebration at Sand Hill Scout Reservation, a wager officials hope will turn America 250 into a real draw for Brooksville businesses, vendors and visitors rather than just a one-night show.
County Commissioner Ryan Amsler led the discussion at an interlocal governmental meeting, where the event was treated as both a public celebration and a countywide collaboration. The county’s share, about $50,000, is set to come from tourism-tax revenue instead of the general fund, and officials have already said another $50,000 has been raised through sponsorships.

The celebration, officially called Hernando County’s Salute to America 250, is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 11210 Cortez Blvd. in Brooksville. Admission and parking will be free, a move that lowers the barrier for families but also puts more pressure on the county to handle traffic, security and crowd flow well enough to make the night feel worth the investment.
Safety planning is being built into the event from the start. Fireworks are expected to be staged well away from parking and event areas and launched from a traditionally wet part of the reservation, a setup meant to reduce risk at a site that will also host a synchronized drone show. The county has described the celebration as its largest and most ambitious Independence Day event to date.

The official event site lists interactive history exhibits, a Family Fun Zone, historical reenactments, a classic car show, food trucks and community vendors. That mix is designed to keep people on the grounds longer, which could help local sellers and nearby businesses if the turnout matches the county’s hopes. Hernando County is also pushing the event through Florida’s Adventure Coast Visitors Bureau, Scouting America Greater Tampa Bay Area Council, the City of Brooksville and other partners, and says it will be featured on America250FL and Florida Main Street platforms.
Sand Hill Scout Reservation itself gives the county room to stage a large gathering. The 1,300-acre camp has 10 campsites used year-round, plus archery, rifle and shotgun ranges, canoeing, rappelling, swimming, lighted pavilions, a health lodge and an administration building. Scouts have long allowed outside groups, including the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce and high school sports teams, to use the property.

A March 24 county agenda showed Brooksville Main Street formally asking for a county contribution to the July 4 effort, underscoring how far the celebration has already moved through government channels. Superintendent Ray Pinder also offered student leadership groups such as ROTC and band programs, giving the county another way to turn the holiday into a broader community event. Whether the celebration becomes a lasting county showcase will depend on how well the budget, sponsorships and safety plan hold together once the crowds arrive.
