Hernando Leopards blank South Sumter 14-0 in five-inning mercy rule
Hernando pitchers Austin Knierim and Sammy Novick combined on a three‑hit shutout as the Leopards beat South Sumter 14-0, the game called after five innings under the 10‑run mercy rule.

At South Sumter High School in Bushnell, the Hernando Leopards routed the South Sumter Raiders 14-0, and the contest was halted after five innings under the 10‑run mercy rule. The game was played Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026, and ended early after Hernando built a decisive lead.
Senior right‑hander Austin Knierim and junior left‑hander Sammy Novick combined on a three‑hit shutout to blank the Raiders. Knierim, a Florida Gulf Coast University signee, started and was replaced in the fourth inning; “Knierim gave way to Novick in the fourth inning and he was almost perfect. He retired the Raiders in order in the fourth inning and pitched a scoreless fifth inning to end a game that was called after five innings due to the 10‑run mercy rule.”
Hernando broke the game open with a six‑run third inning that produced the bulk of the Leopards’ scoring. “Knierim led off the inning with a double to centerfield and Allen followed that with a home run to put Hernando up 3‑0 and the Leopards were far from done. Hernando then loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsmen. Williamson was then hit by a pitch to force in another run that put Hernando ahead 4‑0. With the bases once again loaded, Ellis singled to drive in two more runs and force South Sumter (3‑3) to make a pitching change.” That sequence pushed Hernando well ahead and prompted South Sumter to turn to a new arm in relief.
The victory extended Hernando’s early‑season roll to four straight wins. Earlier in February Hernando beat Central 14-1 on Feb. 10 and Citrus 9-2 on Feb. 12, and the Leopards’ schedule now includes district opponents that figure heavily in the standings. Hernando competes in 3A District 7 alongside South Sumter and Nature Coast Tech, and coach Tim Sims had been preparing for tough district matchups before the game: “They’re a very good team,” Sims said. “Nature Coast has a lot of talent and they’re always very well coached. Those are going to be very big games for us.”
The day also included quieter moments captured on the field; the Hernando squad gathered in prayer before the game, and a toddler identified as Kaine Ellis, 2, was photographed catching and throwing a ball during the contest, with photo credit to Hanna Maglio. The Leopards’ dominant performance, a three‑hit shutout and a six‑run third inning that forced a pitching change and ended the game early, highlights Hernando’s balance of pitching depth and opportunistic offense as the team moves deeper into district play.
