Nature Coast Holds On, Beats Cypress Creek 50 to 46
Nature Coast High edged Cypress Creek 50 to 46 in the third place game of the Greg OConnell Holiday Tournament on December 25, securing a 9 and 2 record and momentum heading into the holidays. The win matters to local fans because the Sharks withstood a second half comeback and will return home to host their own holiday tournament starting Saturday, giving Hernando County teams and supporters a chance to rally.

Nature Coast used a dominant first half and late free throws to close out a 50 to 46 victory over Cypress Creek in the third place game of the Greg OConnell Holiday Tournament at the Springstead gym on December 25. The Sharks built a 35 to 18 halftime lead, then survived a third quarter push by Cypress Creek and relied on timely free throws and a critical offensive rebound in the closing minutes to preserve the win.
Blake Johnson led Nature Coast with 15 points as the team completed its third game in as many days to improve to 9 and 2 on the season. The Sharks split their opening tournament games, beating Mitchell 72 to 69 on Sunday before falling to East Bay 46 to 42 in Monday’s semifinal. The back to back schedule showed in the second half, when Nature Coast’s intensity dipped and Cypress Creek chipped away at the margin.
“Honestly that’s the way our season has gone,” Nature Coast head coach Dave Pisarcik said. “We’re playing a little inconsistent, but we’re finding ways to win. So I’m happy about that, but we’ve got to be more consistent.”

The Greg O’Connell Holiday Tournament, named for the Eagles’ longtime head coach who built up the program in the 1980s and 1990s, draws local programs during the holiday week and provides additional competitive opportunities for Hernando County squads. For Nature Coast the victory is as much about maintaining momentum and building a resume as it is about the final score. At 9 and 2 the Sharks have statistical evidence of a strong start, yet coach and players acknowledge the need to tighten play across all four quarters.
Local impact extends beyond the scoreboard. Nature Coast will host its own holiday tournament starting Saturday following Christmas, giving area families and local businesses a reason to return to home gyms and supporting community athletics during the holiday stretch. The Sharks’ ability to close out tight games will be on display for hometown fans as the team looks to translate early season wins into sustained performance through January.
