Nature Coast, Springstead share girls title as county tennis shines
Jonathan Bunyon’s singles title anchored a Spring Hill showdown where Nature Coast and Springstead split the girls crown and all five county schools won hardware.

Five Hernando County high schools turned Delta Woods Park into a countywide showcase April 9-10, 2026, and Central’s Jonathan Bunyon gave the meet its sharpest edge by winning boys singles while Nature Coast and Springstead split the girls team race.
The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championships brought together Nature Coast Technical High School, Springstead High School, Central High School, Hernando High School and Weeki Wachee High School at the 20-acre Spring Hill park, where tennis courts and other recreation space gave the event a hometown feel. Nature Coast left with the boys doubles crown and the overall boys team title, while Springstead matched that impact on the girls side by sharing the overall team championship.
Bunyon’s victory stood out because it came in the middle of a deeper county field, not in isolation. Springstead’s Nathaniel Singh finished second in boys singles, giving the Eagles another podium result, while Springstead’s Donatella Donis and Ryanna Lee captured the girls singles titles. Central coach Tim Plumadore said his players competed hard and pointed to Bunyon’s dominance, even as another Central match went to a tiebreaker that could have swung the standings.
The spread of winners across the county made the results more than a simple trophy count. Nature Coast’s boys doubles win and team title should give the Sharks momentum entering postseason play, and Springstead’s girls crown share, plus its singles strength, showed a program with multiple threats. Central’s title at the top of boys singles, Hernando’s and Weeki Wachee’s presence in the event, and the close matches elsewhere underscored how narrow the gap has become in Hernando County tennis.
That depth fits a school district that says it has five high schools, 217 teams and 3,940 student-athletes, with boys’ and girls’ tennis among the spring sports. In a county-centered conference built around familiar rivals, the Spring Hill meet showed that Hernando tennis now has enough balance to make every court matter heading into district and regional play.
