A Spring Hill family lost a 61-year-old woman late Friday night at one of the area’s busiest crossroads, when a two-vehicle crash at Drayton Street and County Line Road turned a holiday weekend drive into a fatal collision.

Florida Highway Patrol said the woman was driving a Kia Soul northbound on Drayton Street shortly before 11:30 p.m. when she turned left into the path of an eastbound Ford E350 van. The van, driven by a 40-year-old Brooksville man, struck the Kia in the intersection.

Troopers said the woman was taken to an area hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The Brooksville driver was not reported injured.

The crash remained under investigation, and troopers had not released any additional contributing factors beyond the left turn into the van’s path. Florida crash reports can take up to 10 days to become available, and the records are confidential except for eligible parties, which often leaves families and neighbors waiting for official details after a deadly wreck.

The location carries added weight in Hernando County because County Line Road is a major border corridor for Spring Hill residents moving between neighborhoods, shopping areas and the Pasco County line. It is a road where traffic builds quickly, especially at night and during holiday travel, and where a single mistake at an intersection can end in a fatal crash.

That concern has only sharpened as recent reporting has documented multiple deadly wrecks in Spring Hill and along County Line Road in 2025 and 2026, including other fatal crashes on major roads such as U.S. 19, Spring Hill Drive, Treiman Boulevard and Mondon Hill Road. For residents who use County Line Road every day, the latest death adds to a pattern that has kept roadway safety in focus across Hernando County.

Memorial Day weekend has also brought heavier traffic on suburban corridors like County Line Road, increasing the number of drivers, turning movements and late-night trips through intersections such as Drayton Street. For the woman killed in Friday night’s crash, that routine crossing became the last moment of her life, and for the people who travel that stretch, it renews the question of what can be done to keep another family from facing the same loss.
