Springstead rallies late but falls to Wesley Chapel in regional quarterfinal
Springstead fell behind 5-0, rallied to 5-3 and left Spring Hill one win short of another Sweet 16 run.

Springstead’s season ended with the kind of gut punch that stings longer because it came on its home field. The Eagles fell behind 5-0, clawed back to make it 5-3, and still could not catch Wesley Chapel in a Region 5A-2 quarterfinal Thursday at Springstead High School in Spring Hill.
It was the latest chapter in a rivalry that had become almost routine over three weeks and still felt decisive every time the teams met. Springstead and Wesley Chapel had already split their previous meetings, including Springstead’s 2-0 win over the Wildcats in the 5A District 8 championship game May 1 at Cypress Creek High School. That title game came with Springstead at 19-2 and Wesley Chapel at 19-8, and the regional bracket reflected how close the matchup remained, with Springstead seeded No. 1 and Wesley Chapel No. 2.
That balance made Thursday’s result especially frustrating for the Eagles, who had spent much of the spring building toward another deep postseason run. Springstead had rolled through the county and district season, reached 16-1 during an 11-game winning streak, and entered the playoffs with the kind of resume that suggested another trip into the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Sweet 16 was within reach. Springstead also had reached the Sweet 16 in 2025, raising expectations that this group could do it again.
Instead, Wesley Chapel seized control early and forced Springstead into chase mode. The Eagles answered with a late rally, but the opening deficit proved too steep to erase. Coach Craig Swartout said afterward, “It’s tough. We just started a little too late.”
Even in defeat, the loss underscored what Springstead has built. The Eagles were good enough to win the county, claim the district title, and push a strong Wesley Chapel team to the edge in a third meeting that carried postseason weight every step of the way. The season ended sooner than Springstead wanted, but the standard it established, driven by a senior group that set the tone all year, gives the program a clear base for another run next spring.
