Two Hernando High Seniors Sign with Division I Programs, Highlighting Local Pipeline
Hernando High baseball seniors Austin Knierim and Kaine Ellis signed letters of intent this week to play at Florida Gulf Coast University and the University of Richmond respectively, reinforcing a long running pipeline from the Leopards program to Division I opportunities. The commitments spotlight the program led by coach Tim Sims and carry implications for community pride, youth development, and academic as well as athletic pathways for local student athletes.

Hernando High's baseball program added two more Division I signees this week as seniors Austin Knierim and Kaine Ellis committed to Florida Gulf Coast University and the University of Richmond. The announcements came in the days leading up to Christmas and follow a season in which the Leopards reached the Final Four for the first time since 2011.
Coach Tim Sims, now in his fourth decade leading the program, framed the signings as part of a broader pattern of player development at Hernando High. "Richmond and Florida Gulf Coast, they’re going to two great coaching staffs that continue to develop their players and those two will continue to develop like they have with me for four years. They’re awesome. It’s a great feeling," Sims said, noting the program has produced Division I talent previously and that leadership from Knierim and Ellis stood out. He connected the current pair to the program's earlier signees, saying those players make everyone around them better, including the coaching staff.
Knierim will join FGCU as both a pitcher and a position player after a junior season in which he hit .342 with 10 doubles, two triples and nine home runs, and drove in 41 runs while scoring 29 times in 36 games. On the mound he was 7 and 3 with a 2.67 earned run average and 64 strikeouts in 57.2 innings. He considered other offers from Florida Atlantic, North Florida and Bryant University, and said his choice came down to his interaction with the FGCU staff. "I think it all just came down to the coaches at FGCU were very convincing and I really liked them. … My head coach in college is also going to be the head coach of the Team USA team. So obviously I’ve got to perform but if I go down there and perform I get the chance to play in the Red, White and Blue," Knierim said. He also noted the personal milestone of signing together with his longtime teammate. "We both got to sign on National Signing Day so that’s actually really cool," he said.
Ellis, who served as the Leopards starting catcher and a middle of the order hitter, batted .376 last season with 10 doubles, a triple, two home runs and 20 RBI. He chose Richmond over East Carolina, Jacksonville University and Dayton, citing academic considerations as decisive. "It was really close," Ellis said. "I always wanted to stay in Florida and that was ultimately what I was leaning towards. But what really separated it was the academics. I want to end up majoring in business and Richmond has got a top 15 business school in the country. If it somehow doesn’t work out in baseball I’m set up for a very good future getting my degree in business at Richmond."
The signings carry local significance beyond individual achievement. For Hernando County schools the commitments reflect sustained investment in coaching, facility use, and youth baseball development that can increase college access and visibility for student athletes. For families and local youth programs, the pathway demonstrated by Knierim and Ellis offers a tangible model of reaching both competitive athletic levels and academic goals. As the Leopards prepare for another season with veteran leadership returning, the community will watch how these departures reshape the roster and how the new collegiate chapters for both players progress in the seasons ahead.
