Hilton Elementary dismisses early as wildfire smoke drifts nearby
Smoke from the Frog Hollow wildfire pushed Hilton Elementary to send students home early, while buses still ran on schedule for those who stayed.

Smoke drifting from the Frog Hollow wildfire pushed Hilton Elementary to dismiss students early Monday, even as school officials said the campus was not in direct danger. In a social media post at 10:26 a.m., the school said the move was a precaution because of smoke in the surrounding area. Parents and guardians were told they could pick up children at any time, but pickup was not required.
Students who were not collected were kept in the building under staff supervision, and buses were set to run at their normal afternoon times. The early release gave families a choice between coming in immediately or keeping their child in the school day’s routine until dismissal, a small but important detail for working parents caught in the middle of a fast-moving smoke event.
The smoke was tied to the Frog Hollow fire near Hiltons in Scott County, Virginia. The Virginia Department of Forestry’s wildfire map listed the fire at 80 acres and 50 percent contained at 2 a.m. Monday. By shortly after noon, forestry personnel on scene said it had grown to more than 200 acres, and a later local update put it at 250 acres while still 50 percent contained.
Crews from the Virginia Department of Forestry and the Hiltons Volunteer Fire Department had been working the fire near Countyshire Circle since Sunday afternoon. Scott County EMA Director Jeff Brickey said the fire was in the Hiltons area near the Virginia-Tennessee border and that there was no evacuation alert in effect. Even without a direct threat to the school, the smoke was enough to change the day’s schedule.
Public health guidance helps explain why. The Virginia Department of Health says wildfire smoke can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs, and the CDC says children are among the groups at higher risk from smoke exposure. That risk made Hilton Elementary’s early dismissal a protective move, not a dramatic one, but one that changed the afternoon for families across the school community.
