City Council members will start weighing the tradeoffs that can show up in Lordsburg residents’ utility bills, street upkeep, and city services when they gather for a budget workshop at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, in the City Council Chambers at 409 W. Wabash.

The public notice says a complete agenda will be available at City Hall 72 hours before the meeting, leaving the full list of budget items out of view for now. Even so, the workshop is one of the city’s most important budget checkpoints, because it is where council members and staff can sort through spending priorities, revenue assumptions, and the practical choices that affect police, fire, public works, staffing, and other core services in Hidalgo County’s seat.

The notice was signed by City Clerk Irma Saenz, and the City of Lordsburg also posted it in its news-and-announcements feed, making it clear the workshop is being handled through official municipal channels. Residents who need disability accommodations are asked to call 575-542-3421 at least 24 hours before the meeting.

Saenz’s office plays a central role in that process. The city clerk page says the office is responsible for legal notices for City Council meetings under the New Mexico Open Meetings Act and supports compliance with the New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act. That makes the clerk’s office the point of contact for the paperwork and public access rules that surround the city’s budget decisions.

The May 5 workshop fits a pattern that Lordsburg has followed in recent years. The city held a budget workshop on March 4, 2025, and another on May 1, 2024. The May 15, 2024 regular meeting agenda included approval of those budget-workshop minutes, showing how the workshop feeds directly into later council action. By July 23, 2025, council materials showed the city adopting its fiscal year 2025-2029 Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan, a reminder that the workshop is part of a broader cycle that reaches beyond one meeting and into long-term capital planning.

Recent 2025 council materials also showed attention to budget adjustments, senior-center funding, and other service-level issues, underscoring how quickly workshop decisions can reach residents. If line items rise, local taxes or fees can come under pressure. If they fall, service levels can tighten. If they stay flat, city departments may have to make do with what they already have.

For Lordsburg, the May 5 workshop is where those choices start to take shape.
