Lordsburg snaps six-game skid with 16-6 win over Capitan
Daniel Scott drove in seven as Lordsburg ended a six-game skid with a 16-6 rout of Capitan, setting up Friday’s district rematch.

Daniel Scott’s seven-RBI night gave Lordsburg High School exactly the kind of breakout it needed, as the Mavericks rolled past Capitan 16-6 on Saturday and ended a six-game losing streak.
The win was more than a reset in the standings. It showed that Lordsburg could still create runs in volume, something that had been missing during a rough stretch that dropped the Mavericks to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in 2A District 3. Scott went 3-for-4 with three runs and a triple, and MaxPreps listed the seven RBI as a career high. In a game that never felt close for long, Lordsburg did not just edge by Capitan, it broke the game open and kept the Tigers from building any sustained response.
For a team trying to steady itself in late April, that matters. Lordsburg’s offense had been searching for a clean night at the plate, and the 16-run outburst suggested the lineup finally found rhythm at the right time. The timing is critical because district games now carry added weight, and the New Mexico Activities Association’s 2026 baseball postseason calendar shows state tournament play beginning May 6, with first-round games May 8-9 and the finals May 14-16. Every district result now feeds directly into seeding, pressure and playoff positioning.
The matchup also arrives with a quick turnaround. Lordsburg is scheduled to face Capitan again Friday, April 25, in another district doubleheader, giving the Mavericks an immediate chance to show whether Saturday was a true turning point or just one hot afternoon. That rematch should reveal more about whether Lordsburg has solved its offensive problems or simply caught an opponent at the right moment.
Capitan was already in a difficult spot entering the game. The Tigers had lost 18-1 to Mesilla Valley Christian School on April 14, and the defeat to Lordsburg became their eighth straight loss. That backdrop made the result look even more decisive for the Mavericks, who also beat Capitan in the teams’ previous meeting in April 2025. For Lordsburg, the bigger question now is whether one emphatic win can carry into the next district test and change the tone of the season.
