Lordsburg softball bounces back with 9-3 win over Capitan
Lordsburg snapped a three-game skid and earned its first district win, beating Capitan 9-3 to turn last year’s playoff loss into a regular-season reset.
Lordsburg answered a three-game losing streak with its first district victory, beating Capitan 9-3 on Thursday, April 23, and moving to 1-3 in district play and 8-8 overall. Capitan fell to 9-7.
The result mattered because Capitan had not lost at home in seven games dating back to last season, and Lordsburg ended that run with a six-run win. The Mavericks have now won seven games by six runs or more this season, a sign that when they find their rhythm, they can separate from an opponent and hold that edge.
The win also carried payback. Capitan beat Lordsburg 14-7 in the New Mexico Activities Association Class A/2A state tournament on May 14, 2025, and this regular-season meeting gave the Mavericks a chance to answer that loss. Under head coach Rodney Plowman, Lordsburg’s 2025-26 roster includes Natalie Guerrero and Dani Esquivel as the team tries to turn a mid-April rebound into something steadier.
Lordsburg was set to face Mescalero Apache on April 28 before hosting Capitan again on April 30. At Lordsburg High School, that stretch will show whether the Capitan win was a true reset or just a brief pause in the skid.
