Lordsburg softball season ends with 12-2 playoff loss to Capitan
Lordsburg’s spring ended in Capitan, where a 12-2 playoff loss closed an 11-11 season and sent the Mavericks home after a run that still mattered in Hidalgo County.

For Lordsburg, the postseason exit ended a spring that kept the Mavericks in the county spotlight even as the margin got wider against a familiar rival. Capitan beat the Lordsburg Mavericks 12-2 on Wednesday, May 6, finishing a season sweep and handing Lordsburg its third straight loss to the Tigers, a result that closed the book on an 11-11 year for Rodney Plowman’s program.
The loss carried extra weight because playoff softball can turn on one big inning, and Capitan seized that moment with a relentless night at the plate. MaxPreps reported that Cambree West went 4-for-4 with three doubles and a triple, a career night that drove the Tigers’ offense, while Kailei Smith added a 2-for-4 game with a double. Capitan finished with a .529 team batting average, a level of production that left Lordsburg little room to recover.
That made the ending sting more in Lordsburg, where the season had already passed through a district race that tested how much depth the roster could absorb. The Mavericks’ roster listed Mia Ford, Journey Saucedo, Autumn Flores, Layla Grado, Natalie Guerrero, Madi Mansfield, Pam Salcido, Dani Esquivel and Julyssa Rodriguez, a group that carried the team through a schedule that was good enough to reach the postseason, but not deep enough to survive the bracket.

Capitan came in with stronger momentum. The Tigers improved to 14-7 with the victory and extended a five-game winning streak, building on a District 3-1A/2A championship they sealed by sweeping Lordsburg on April 30 to finish 8-1 in district play. Capitan also had the benefit of a season that got rolling on March 19, then accelerated quickly into May.
The broader state picture underscored how unforgiving this stage can be for smaller programs. The New Mexico Activities Association listed the 2026 softball championship dates as May 6-16, and the 1A/2A and 3A championships were set for Los Altos Softball Complex in Albuquerque. For programs like Lordsburg, reaching that level means travel, pressure and limited margin for error, and this time the Mavericks ran into a Capitan team that had their number again.
