Hiland Girls Triumph, Boys Dominate in Winter Conference Play
Hiland's Lady Hawks beat Tusky Valley 51, 33 on December 13, led by Evie Mast and Reagan Zerger, while the Hiland boys routed Tuscarawas Valley 65, 27 on December 16. These wins extend a strong start for both programs, energizing the local community and highlighting the role of high school sports in student health and school spirit.

Hiland High School collected decisive victories across its winter basketball slate this week, with the Lady Hawks posting a 51 to 33 Inter Valley Conference win over Tusky Valley on December 13 and the Hiland boys cruising to a 65 to 27 win over Tuscarawas Valley on December 16. The girls were paced by Evie Mast with 17 points, Reagan Zerger with 13 points along with nine rebounds, four steals and three blocks, and Macy Mullet with 12 points and four assists. The girls team had also beaten Garaway 56 to 6 on December 10, continuing a string of strong outings.
Game flow for the Lady Hawks featured balanced scoring and a focus on defense that limited Tusky Valley to 33 points. Zerger’s presence on the boards and in the passing lanes created transitions that Mast and Mullet finished in the half court. The girls victory reinforces Hiland’s conference competitiveness and provides momentum as the schedule intensifies.
On the boys side, the Hiland offense was led by Caleb Mishler, who sank six 3 pointers on his way to 20 points, and Grant Bille who added 10 points. The 65 to 27 result reflected deep scoring and efficient ball movement that allowed the Hawks to build and sustain a lead throughout the contest.

Beyond the stat lines, these games matter to Holmes County. High school athletics provide regular opportunities for youth to engage in sustained physical activity, social connection and structured competition, all of which support mental and physical well being. Local wins also draw families and neighbors together, generating community pride and informal support networks for students. At the same time sustained success raises questions about equitable access to resources for all schools. Investment in coaching, facilities and medical oversight influences both competitive balance and student safety.
As the winter season continues, Hiland’s performances will be watched not only for standings but for how the programs sustain health minded practices, broaden participation and keep student athletes safe while fostering community cohesion.
