Holmes County Girls Track Builds Strong Foundation With Depth, Youth
Seven freshmen joined the Golden Bears this spring as coach Pittman targets a climb from last season's fifth-place WCAL finish.

Freshman Cylee Betson was among seven first-year athletes who joined the Golden Bears this spring, bringing sprint and hurdle coverage to a program that finished fifth in the WCAL last season and is aiming to climb the standings.
Betson's ability to compete across both sprints and hurdles gives the Golden Bears flexibility in relays and individual events. The rest of the freshman class fills other gaps in the lineup: Rebecca Wickens in mid-distance, throwers Autumn Hochstettler and Amelia Bernhart, and sprinters Josie Miller, Rylen Falk and Mya Shaffer. Senior Emma Jane Franks, competing in sprints and pole vault, led the newcomer group into the program.
"Last season we finished fifth, so we would like to top that this year," Pittman said. "Being able to fill events this season should help with a chance to place higher. We have such a tough league, though, so you really never know."
Five more newcomers were expected to contribute: sophomore Ellianna Babbitt in distance and relays, sophomore Chelsie Cooper in sprints and relays, sophomore McKaylin Getchey in sprints and hurdles, freshman Brooklyn Hustack in sprints and relays and freshman Sophie Arnold in distance events and relays.
The Knights entered the season with a smaller roster but strong returning talent concentrated in the distance events and throws. Coach Mellor acknowledged the thinner numbers while expressing confidence in the athletes at the top of his lineup.

"We will not have as much depth in our relays and distances, but our quality at the top of the order will be very good," Mellor said. Depth and sprint experience were identified as challenges that could surface early in the season.
Four seniors anchored the Knights' returning group: sprinters Grace Dorffer, Mya Geiser and Baylie Horrisberger, along with middle-distance runner Leah Lehman. Seven juniors also returned, including throwers Kaley Conrad and Mariah Michaels, pole vaulter Elandria Kindy, high jumper Evelyn Arnold, distance runner Isabelle Rohrer and sprinters Brinna Miller and Liberty Scholz.
Nine sophomores were expected to add depth across hurdles, pole vault, field events and distance: Adeline Carpenter in hurdles/sprints, Audrienna Goodrich in sprints, Samantha Kerby in pole vault, Abigail Mendez and Elizabeth Pauli in middle distance, Jaida Reid in distance, Gretta Smith in high jump/hurdles, Ella Tomlinson in sprints/long jump and Madison Yoh in pole vault/hurdles.
For Pittman and the Golden Bears, the freshman class strengthened the throws and sprint groups heading into WCAL competition, where last season's fifth-place finish set the benchmark to beat. For the Knights, a senior class with WCAL experience and a junior group that covers throws, distance and field events gave Mellor confidence that strong performances at the front of the roster could carry the team despite fewer athletes behind them.
