Holmes County libraries schedule free May storytimes for young children
Free 10:30 a.m. storytimes will rotate through Holmes County’s three branches in May, giving children ages 2 to 5 a no-registration preschool outing.

Parents looking for a free preschool outing have three easy drop-in storytime options at Holmes County District Public Library this month, with 10:30 a.m. sessions at the Central Library, East Branch and Killbuck Community Library and no registration required.
The Central Library in Millersburg will host storytime at 10:30 a.m. Fridays, May 1, 8 and 15. The Killbuck Community Library will hold sessions at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, May 5 and 12, while the East Branch in Walnut Creek will offer storytime at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, May 6, 13, 20 and 27. Each program is designed for children ages 2 to 5 with a parent or caregiver and includes stories, songs and rhymes.
The branch-by-branch schedule gives families in different parts of Holmes County the same early-literacy opportunity without forcing everyone to travel to one location. That matters in a county the U.S. Census Bureau estimates at 44,970 residents as of July 1, 2025, with 29.9% of the population under 18. For busy households, the no-registration format lowers another barrier, turning the library into an easy stop for a morning routine that can build listening, language and social skills for toddlers and preschoolers.

May’s storytimes also lead directly into the library’s summer calendar. Holmes County District Public Library says its 2026 Summer Reading Program runs June 1 through July 25, and families can register at the Central Library from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 29. The system also operates two bookmobiles for county residents who lack access to a library facility, extending the same reach beyond the branches.
The library’s winter 2025-26 newsletter showed the same pattern of repeated children’s programs, including story times and a Little Learners Playgroup for children up to age 5 with an adult. Together, the May schedule, summer reading sign-up and bookmobile service show a county library system using familiar, low-cost programs to keep young children connected to books before the summer rush begins.
