Holmes County seniors gain free legal help through new program

Holmes County seniors facing a will dispute, a housing problem, a Medicare or Medicaid question, or a consumer scam now have a free legal first stop. Pro Seniors’ Legal Helpline offers Ohio residents age 60 and over 30 minutes of legal information, advice and referral on any civil matter, no matter their income or resources.

The helpline can handle a wide range of issues that often trip up older adults, including Medicare, Medicaid, Medicaid estate recovery, living wills, durable powers of attorney and related legal problems. If the caller needs more help after the initial consultation, the helpline can refer that person to another legal assistance provider or a private attorney.

The Ohio Department of Aging points older adults to the helpline as an important first step when legal trouble comes up. That advice matters in a state where legal aid resources are limited, especially for seniors trying to sort out documents, benefits or family disagreements before they become more expensive problems.

Pro Seniors, founded in 1975, says its mission is to protect the interests and independence of older adults. The organization also describes the helpline as a way for Ohio seniors to speak with an attorney free of charge, a service that can be especially useful for residents who may not be able to pay for private legal advice.

Holmes County’s official website already lists legal resources, including community legal aid and bar association links, and the new program adds another direct option for residents in Millersburg and across the county. For many seniors, that means a faster route to answers on civil legal issues and a clearer path to the next level of help when a problem cannot be solved in one call.
