Holmes County Voters Face April 6 Registration Deadline for May 5 Primary
Holmes County voters have until April 6 to register for the May 5 primary, with election offices staying open until 9 p.m. that night.

Holmes County voters have less than a month to register before the April 6 deadline locks in eligibility for Ohio's May 5 primary and special election. The Ohio Secretary of State's office published the official statewide 2026 election schedule establishing deadlines and key dates that counties, including Holmes County, must follow.
Ohio law requires voters to register or update their registration no later than 30 days before an election. For the May 5 primary, that cutoff falls on April 6. Boards of elections and the Ohio Secretary of State's office will remain open until 9 p.m. that day to accommodate last-minute registrations. Anyone who misses the April 6 deadline will not be shut out of voting entirely: any registration updates made after the cutoff will take effect for the next election.
Early in-person voting and absentee-by-mail requests both begin April 7, the day after the registration deadline closes. Early voting continues through the weekend immediately before Election Day, including both the Saturday and Sunday prior to May 5. Polls on Election Day open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.
Absentee voters face a significant rule change this cycle. A new Ohio law requires most absentee ballots to be received by the close of polls on Election Day to be counted. Absentee ballots not returned by mail must arrive at the local board of elections by 7:30 p.m. on May 5. Voters who plan to use mail-in ballots should account for postal transit time to ensure delivery before that hard stop.

Secretary of State Frank LaRose confirmed on Feb. 19 which partisan statewide candidates are conditionally qualified to appear on the May 5 primary ballot. Races include U.S. Senate, governor, and Ohio Supreme Court seats, drawing candidates from the Democratic, Republican, and Libertarian parties.
Looking beyond May, Ohio has two more 2026 registration deadlines: July 6 for the August 4 special election, and October 5 for the November 3 general election. Holmes County voters with questions about early voting locations, local contests on the May 5 ballot, or absentee ballot drop-off procedures should contact the Holmes County Board of Elections directly for county-specific guidance.
