Norwayne clinches WCAL girls title, first outright crown in 40 years
Norwayne beat Chippewa 58-43 in Doylestown to clinch the WCAL outright title; Allie DeMassimo scored a game-high 18 and an Instagram post claimed the program’s first league crown in 40 years.

Norwayne secured the Wayne County Athletic League outright girls basketball championship with a 58-43 victory over Chippewa in Doylestown on Thursday, Feb. 19, as Allie DeMassimo led the Bobcats with a game-high 18 points and Norwayne built a decisive halftime edge.
The game opened tight, Chippewa held a 19-18 lead after the first quarter, before Norwayne exploded in the second. Norwayne put together a reported 20-1 run and outscored Chippewa 20-4 in the second quarter to take a 37-19 lead into the break; Chippewa did not record a field goal in the quarter until 55 seconds remained. Norwayne maintained the margin in the second half to close 58-43.
Along with DeMassimo’s 18, Ava Maibach contributed 12 points for Norwayne. Chippewa’s Aira Regan finished with 11 points; a game photo showed Regan trying to keep her balance on the sideline. Norwayne’s Courtney Cline was pictured smiling after a layup while drawing a foul. The inside battle and rebounding emerged as defining factors in the final margin.
Chippewa head coach Katie Miller pointed to the physical edge as the game’s turning point: "Rebounding and they beat us up inside." Miller also framed the result in league context, saying, "We have a great league. Great coaches. Lot of great players. Norwayne is of course at the top. They had a great season last year. Then you got Waynedale, Smithville and Dalton who are well-coached and have nice players as well. On the bottom half, you got Hillsdale, Northwestern and Rittman. Hopefully this helps us. We have to turn the page and recover for Saturday."

Published standings after the game list differing final records. One account shows Norwayne at 19-2 overall and 13-1 in WCAL with Chippewa 14-8 and 11-3 in league play; the league standings table available online lists Norwayne at 20-2 overall (13-1 WCAL) and Chippewa at 15-8 (11-3 WCAL). An earlier regional ranking had Norwayne at 17-2 (11-1). Those variations appear in postgame materials and underscore the need to reconcile the official final regular-season totals.
Norwayne’s win sets a local postseason arc: tournament schedules list Beachwood at Norwayne on Feb. 24 and Villa Angela-St Joseph at Chippewa on Feb. 24, alongside other area matchups such as Waynedale at Mineral Ridge and Smithville at Loudonville. Norwayne arrives into the district round as a program that reached last year’s Division V state final, while Chippewa turns its attention to an immediate tournament test this coming week.
A team Instagram post celebrated the outcome with the line, "WCAL TITLE! For the first time in 40 years, Norwayne has won the Wayne County Athletic League title! Norwayne finished their regular season", a historical claim that was posted with the celebration and remains uncorroborated by postgame materials.
