OHSAA Tournament Draw Reveals Wooster-Area Boys Basketball Paths This Weekend

The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the boys basketball tournament draw, with Divisions III–VII drawn Feb. 15 and Divisions I–II drawn Feb. 22, and mapped the road each of the 16 Wayne and Holmes County teams will navigate this weekend. Seeds and sectional pairings set immediate tests for programs ranging from Wooster to Smithville and Orrville.

Wooster opens the postseason with a difficult road assignment in the Northeast 5 bracket, meeting St. Vincent-St. Mary of Akron in a sectional semifinal. "The Generals have a tall task to start the tournament, opening on the road against No. 9 St. Vincent-St. Mary in the Northeast 5 bracket. Wooster seeks to snap a three-game losing skid in the playoffs." Other listings describe St. Vincent-St. Mary as Division III's No. 17 state-ranked, underscoring the caliber of Wooster's opponent and how quickly the bracket becomes a high-stakes test.

In Division VI, No. 3 seeded Smithville enters as a district favorite, positioned in the Northeast 3 bracket. "No. 3 seeded Smithville will be favorites to win their district as their district is more than winnable for the Smithies," and the Smithies' biggest projected hurdle is No. 4 seeded Brookfield in a potential district final. As co-league winners in the WCAL, Smithville carries a "real shot at reaching a regional semifinal or final" if it clears the district.

Dalton, Loudonville and Rittman comprise the Northeast 2 district in Division VI, and their sectional finals seedings leave them cast as underdogs. Dalton enters the postseason with recent region-level success; a year ago Dalton "led the way with a trip to the regional finals in Division VI." The draw places Dalton, Loudonville and Rittman as "big underdogs in their sectional final games," setting up a steep climb for any repeat deep run.

Neighborhood matchups in the Northeast 4 bracket put Northwestern and Waynedale on the same side, with Northwestern's Huskies projected to struggle against Akron Manchester. "Northwestern and Waynedale are both on the same side of their bracket as the Huskies will be overmatched versus Akron Manchester in their sectional final." Akron Manchester, the Golden Bears, would move past Black River to reach district semifinals, and a Golden Bears win there would likely set up a victory over Waynedale.

Norwayne's postseason profile carries league implications in the Northeast 2 bracket. "Norwayne very well could enter the tournament being co-WCAL champions, but the Bobcats chances at winning another district title will be put to the test versus Keystone (possibly semifinals) and Chagrin Falls (possible final)." Those potential matchups frame Norwayne’s path to a district crown.

In Division IV, seed listings show Orrville as the sixth seed and West Holmes as the 14th seed, giving both programs defined roles in their initial sectional rounds and measurable goals for advancing. Last season four area boys teams advanced to regionals, Dalton to the Division VI regional finals, plus Norwayne, Smithville and Hillsdale, and this weekend’s draw both rewards last year’s achievers and creates immediate opportunities for others. With regional mapping placing some higher-round sites at venues such as the College of Wooster for Division II Region 6, local programs face weekend schedules that could reshape postseason expectations across Wayne and Holmes counties.
