West Holmes History Club expands activities beyond the classroom
West Holmes History Club is taking students into Holmes County’s archives and landmarks, turning local history into hands-on learning beyond the classroom.

West Holmes High School’s History Club is widening its reach beyond textbook lessons, giving students a chance to work with Holmes County’s own history in a more hands-on way. At the Millersburg high school, the club adds another extracurricular option for students who want to connect classroom learning to the places and stories around them.
That local focus fits Holmes County especially well. The county had 44,223 residents in the 2020 Census, was formed in 1824 from parts of Coshocton, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties, and was organized the following year. It was named for Andrew Holmes, an officer killed in the War of 1812, and its county seat is Millersburg. In a place known for a deep local-history culture, a student club centered on the past has natural room to grow.
The Holmes County Historical Society, founded in 1948, gives that interest a ready home. Based at the Victorian House Museum in Millersburg, the society says its Historical Gallery helps visitors learn more about area landmarks and preserves what it describes as the most comprehensive historical research collection on Holmes County’s history. Its work covers the county’s 24 towns and landmarks, a span that gives students plenty of material to study beyond the classroom walls.
For West Holmes students, that kind of access turns history from a subject into an experience. West Holmes Local School District says its mission is to develop motivated, well-rounded students and leaders, and the History Club fits that goal by helping students build knowledge, curiosity and a stronger connection to the community they live in. As West Holmes High School continues to build its extracurricular offerings, the club is becoming one more way for students to see how local learning can connect to real opportunity in Holmes County.
