Arcata Asks Residents to Conserve Water During HBMWD Repairs
The City of Arcata requested that all water customers conserve water on November 18 and November 20 while the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District completed scheduled distribution repairs. The temporary measures aimed to maintain adequate water supply and fire protection, and residents were instructed to limit usage to essential needs.

The City of Arcata issued a notice on November 17 asking all water customers to reduce consumption on November 18 and November 20 while the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District carried out scheduled water distribution repairs. City officials indicated there were no anticipated outages for Arcata water customers, but asked residents to adopt temporary conservation measures to help maintain adequate supply and fire protection during the maintenance.
Customers were asked to minimize water use to only what was essential. Specific requests included avoiding outdoor watering or irrigation, car washing, filling pools, ponds, water tanks or large containers, bulk water use of any kind, large laundry loads or high volume cleaning, and any nonessential indoor or outdoor water use. The city emphasized that cooperation would support reliable water service and available capacity for fire protection while HBMWD completed its work.
The advisory applied to all Arcata water accounts and was distributed as a City of Arcata News Flash on November 17. For residents monitoring potential issues, the Environmental Services Department remained the primary contact for reporting leaks or other water concerns at (707) 822 8184.

The temporary conservation request highlights the interdependence between municipal customers and regional water infrastructure. Even when outages are not expected, planned maintenance can reduce system flexibility and capacity, making voluntary reductions a practical tool to safeguard public safety priorities such as fire response. For households and small businesses, the measures were largely precautionary but could have required short term adjustments to landscaping and cleaning routines.
Looking ahead, the episode underscores the importance of communication between the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District and local jurisdictions in managing routine maintenance without disrupting service. For Arcata residents, following the city guidance during similar events can help preserve service continuity and ensure adequate resources for emergency needs.
