Arcata transit trims late-night service on Orange route through May
HTA posted Jan. 9 service changes: Red and Gold run 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Orange loses late-night weekday runs through May 22; riders should plan accordingly.

The Humboldt Transit Authority posted a brief advisory on Jan. 9 outlining near-term schedule changes for the Arcata & Mad River Transit System. Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 20, the Red and Gold routes will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and that schedule will remain in place through Friday, May 22. The Orange route will no longer operate late-night weekday service but will continue its normal Saturday and holiday schedule.
The announcement gives riders a clear planning horizon through late May but offers limited detail beyond the specific time windows. The change affects commuters, students and workers who rely on late-night weekday trips between Arcata, the Mad River corridor and connecting stops. Riders who typically use the Orange route for shifts that end after 10 p.m. will need to find alternate transportation or adjust schedules. The Red and Gold time window preserves most daytime and early evening service, which helps maintain access to employment, education and essential errands for much of the day.
Institutionally, the advisory reflects a short-term operational adjustment rather than a permanent timetable overhaul. By setting an end date of May 22, HTA gives itself a window to reassess ridership patterns, driver availability and budgetary or maintenance constraints without committing to long-term reductions. For riders, however, the advisory provides only a limited menu of information: precise route time adjustments are summarized, but connections, frequency changes and replacement options are not detailed in the notice.
Local impacts will vary by neighborhood and by rider needs. Students traveling to late classes, hospitality and health care workers finishing evening shifts, and residents who rely on late buses for appointments or family obligations will be the most affected. The reduction in late-night weekday service on the Orange route may also change travel patterns for riders who transfer between AMRTS and regional services, potentially complicating commutes that depend on timely connections.

HTA directed riders to its channels for additional route and service notices. Riders should review the updated schedules before Jan. 20, subscribe to HTA alerts if available, and allow extra time for transfers. Employers and campus coordinators may want to coordinate shift times or transportation supports for employees and students who depend on late buses.
Our two cents? Check the schedule, plan alternatives now and spread the word to co-workers, classmates and neighbors who ride late. Staying a step ahead beats getting stranded.
