Art of Aging fundraiser seeks volunteers, donations for senior services

Area 1 Agency on Aging has served older adults in Humboldt and Del Norte counties since 1980, and its Art of Aging fundraiser sought volunteers and donations to keep those services moving. The ask was practical: more help means more support for seniors who need rides, information and guidance to remain independent in Humboldt County.

At the center of that work is A1AA’s Volunteer Driver Program, which provides transportation to and from healthcare appointments and grocery shopping in Humboldt County. More older adults can keep medical visits and weekly errands within reach. The program covers everyday trips that let people age in place instead of relying on already-strained family caregivers.

Its programs are designed to help older adults stay connected, healthy and safe, and that scope goes well beyond rides. Its services include Medicare education, HICAP counseling, ombudsman services, planning and public comment, senior information resources and home-sharing. California has 33 Area Agencies on Aging established under the Older Americans Act. A1AA submitted its Area Plan 2024-2028 to the California Department of Aging on April 29, 2024, and its July 2025 newsletter marked the organization’s 45th anniversary.

Volunteers matter as much as money. Volunteer opportunities include administrative and clerical work, and its volunteer interest form invites people to “make a difference in our community while making new friends, developing new skills, and having fun.” The agency also hosted a Volunteer Expo, a free event that brought together local nonprofits and community members interested in volunteering.
