Body Found Near Dock at Eureka's Halvorsen Park, Death Under Investigation

Just before 5:30 p.m. Friday, multiple Eureka Police Department units converged on Halvorsen Park after a man was found deceased near one of the waterfront docks, bringing the Humboldt County Coroner's Office and a member of the county's Crime Scene Evidence Team to the 3.5-acre park along Waterfront Drive.

Officers stretched yellow police tape across a section of the park while investigators and coroner personnel worked inside the secured perimeter. A bicycle was found near where the man lay, one of the few tangible details visible to bystanders on the adjacent walking trail.

As of Saturday morning, EPD had not released the man's identity or a cause of death. The circumstances surrounding the death remain under active investigation.

The deployment of CSET alongside coroner personnel reflects the procedural seriousness with which investigators are treating the discovery. Depending on the coroner's findings, the case could develop into a homicide investigation, an accidental death inquiry, or a medical-cause determination pending toxicology. None of those outcomes have been indicated publicly.

Investigators moved to gather witness statements and notify next of kin as part of standard death investigation protocol. EPD has not issued a formal press release, and no named department spokesperson had addressed the incident publicly.

Halvorsen Park, nestled between the bay and the Eureka waterfront trail adjacent to the Adorni Center, serves as the city's primary venue for outdoor concerts and community festivals and can accommodate several thousand people during large events. A law enforcement presence at that location on a Friday evening drew immediate attention from walkers and cyclists on the trail.

EPD is asking anyone who witnessed activity in or near Halvorsen Park on the evening of March 28 to contact the department's investigative unit.
