Cal Poly Humboldt unveiled five new degree programs this week targeting some of the North Coast's most persistent workforce shortages, from understaffed hospital corridors to rural classrooms without qualified science teachers. All are set to launch this fall.

The additions include a Health & Medical Science B.S., a Critical Agriculture Studies & Agroecology B.A., a STEM Education M.A., and a Media Arts B.F.A. The programs represent the latest round of curriculum development under the university's polytechnic buildout, the multi-year transformation that began when Cal Poly Humboldt, formerly Humboldt State University, became California's third polytechnic institution in January 2022.

The health science degree carries the most immediate regional weight. Statewide workforce assessments have flagged the North Coast as facing critical shortfalls in nursing and allied health professionals, shortages that have strained Humboldt County hospitals and clinics for years. The university has structured the program around local internships and direct partnerships with regional healthcare providers, building a clear line from campus to county employment rather than training graduates who leave for larger markets.

Critical Agriculture Studies & Agroecology targets a different kind of local need. The B.A. is aimed at building capacity in sustainable food systems for the small and mid-scale farms, fisheries, and food businesses that anchor much of the county's rural economy. Agroecological training has been largely absent from the regional academic landscape, and the new program frames that absence as a workforce development opportunity.

The STEM Education M.A. addresses teacher shortages in science and math, disciplines where rural Northern California school districts have consistently struggled to recruit and retain qualified instructors. The degree is designed to produce classroom-ready K-12 educators and keep them rooted in the region.

State funding tied to the polytechnic transition has also financed construction of an Engineering & Technology building, new research laboratories, expanded student housing, and a planned Healthcare Education Hub in Arcata, intended to anchor health science programs in dedicated clinical space.

Prospective students and transfer applicants can find application deadlines, sample coursework, and contact information on the university's academic programs pages.
