County Considers EV Charging Donation for Airport Parking Upgrade
On December 16 the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors agenda included a consent item proposing acceptance of a donation of two electric vehicle charging stations for California Redwood Coast, Humboldt County Airport parking. The donation would complete a parking lot modernization project and allow the Aviation Department to claim remaining grant funding, a development that could affect travel convenience and local climate goals.

On December 16 the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors agenda included a consent item asking the board to accept a donation from the Redwood Coast Energy Authority of two ChargePoint CT4000 dual port, bollard mounted electric vehicle charging stations for the California Redwood Coast, Humboldt County Airport parking lot. The agenda materials listed the chargers purchase cost at about $26,608 and noted the Aviation Department may choose extended warranties at an additional approximately $3,400.
Accepting the donation was presented as the final step needed to complete the airport parking lot modernization project and to enable the Aviation Department to claim remaining grant funding tied to the upgrade. The item was placed on the consent calendar, where routine approvals are typically handled in a single action, signaling that county staff view the contribution as a straightforward augmentation to ongoing infrastructure work.
For local travelers and airport employees the chargers would increase access to electric vehicle fueling at ACV, supporting residents who have switched to electric cars and visitors who travel to the North Coast for business and tourism. The installation would also align with regional efforts to reduce transportation emissions, a priority for many local governments and energy authorities seeking to leverage state and federal grant programs for clean transportation.
Budgetary considerations remain, including the optional extended warranties and future maintenance and electricity costs that will fall to the Aviation Department. Claiming the remaining grant funding hinges on formal acceptance and installation, which means timing for when the chargers become operational will depend on final procurement and deployment steps.
The Redwood Coast Energy Authority donation reflects a broader collaboration between regional energy planners and county services to expand charging infrastructure outside urban centers. For Humboldt County residents this development promises more convenient charging at the airport and strengthens the case for additional investments in electric vehicle infrastructure across rural and coastal corridors.
