A reported sexual assault at St. Joseph’s Hospital moved from bedside contact to an arrest in just over a day, with Humboldt County deputies identifying a suspect, getting a Ramey warrant and taking him into custody at his Eureka home.

A deputy was dispatched to the hospital at about 6:15 p.m. on May 11, 2026, to meet with a 40-year-old victim who reported the assault. When the deputy arrived, the victim was accompanied by a member of the North Coast Rape Crisis Team, a detail that highlights how quickly local support services can be brought into a case once a survivor reaches out for help.

During the investigation, deputies identified the suspect as Rashad Carter, 32, of Eureka. Based on the victim’s statement and evidence collected, investigators secured a Ramey warrant, a California arrest warrant issued before formal charges are filed. The warrant allowed deputies to move quickly once they had enough probable cause to act.

Deputies went to Carter’s residence in the 2100 block of Fern Street in Eureka at about 9:32 p.m. on May 12, 2026, and arrested him on the warrant. He was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of rape by force or fear, oral copulation by use of force or fear, and sexual penetration with force or fear.

The arrest shows how a sexual-assault case can progress rapidly once a report is made in a medical setting and investigators have direct contact with the victim. It also reflects the role of hospital-based response and crisis support in helping preserve evidence and move a case toward a warrant.

Humboldt County’s victim-services materials describe the North Coast Rape Crisis Team as offering free, confidential support, counseling, advocacy and law-enforcement assistance for survivors of sexual violence. The Humboldt County District Attorney Victim Witness Assistance Program says it helps victims with crisis intervention, case information, courtroom support, restraining-order assistance and restitution applications.
