Eureka turned the opening weekend of Big 5 play into a warning shot, as Ty Crawford and Brayden Bermers overpowered Fortuna and helped the Loggers seize early control of the conference race. Crawford threw six no-hit innings in the opener and struck out 12 in an 11-0 win, then Bermers followed with seven innings, two hits allowed and 13 strikeouts as Eureka finished the sweep with an 8-0 victory.

The two-game burst gave Eureka 19 runs and, more important for the standings, a staff that has barely been touched in league play. By the time the Loggers moved to 3-0 in Big 5 baseball, they were sitting alone in first place, one game ahead of Del Norte. Later reporting said Eureka pitchers had allowed just three hits across their first three conference games, a stretch that has put the Loggers in position to dictate the early season instead of chase it.

For Fortuna, the weekend was a blunt reminder that a slow start can harden fast once league play begins. The Huskies could not solve Crawford or Bermers, and the loss leaves them needing offense and cleaner contact against the conference’s best arms before the gap widens. Against a Eureka staff that has set the tone with strikeout totals and hit suppression, every missed scoring chance carries extra weight.

Del Norte made its own statement in Crescent City, sweeping Arcata in a baseball doubleheader that followed a familiar script of pitching and defense. The Warriors won 4-0 in the opener and 10-0 in five innings in the nightcap, keeping the Tigers from gaining any traction in the series. Del Norte entered conference play as the reigning Big 5 baseball champion, after ending an 11-year wait for the title last season, and the sweep reinforced how quickly the Warriors can turn a league weekend into separation.

Arcata had a tougher opening than it wanted on both diamonds. The Tigers were also swept in softball, 7-6 and 2-1, by a Del Norte program that has now won three straight Big 5 softball titles. That combination of close softball games and lopsided baseball results left Arcata with little margin heading into the next stretch, especially with Eureka looming on the schedule.

The opening round of league play gave Humboldt County a clear early hierarchy: Eureka and Del Norte looked like teams ready to defend their place, while Fortuna and Arcata were left to fix lineup issues, sharpen pitching and find runs before the standings begin to stick.
