Eureka Man Arrested on Child Sex Charges After Denying Prior Allegations
Tristan Mitchell, 42, faces 8 felony sex charges involving minors; he had publicly blogged denying a 2024 abuse probe that preceded his arrest.
Tristan Mitchell, a 42-year-old Eureka man who publicly blogged his denials of a 2024 abuse investigation, now faces eight felony charges alleging sexual offenses against minors after the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office arrested him on a Ramey warrant and booked him with no possibility of bail.
The charges are extensive: four counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a minor under Penal Code 288(a), two counts of oral copulation with a minor under PC 287(c)(1), and two counts of forcible sexual penetration using a foreign object under PC 289(a)(1)(a). A Ramey warrant, issued before a formal arraignment, allows law enforcement to arrest a suspect when there is probable cause a crime has been committed.
The arrest adds a stark coda to what Mitchell had cast publicly as a resolved matter. He had previously written about a 2024 investigation into abuse allegations, framing the inquiry as unfounded. Investigators apparently reached a different conclusion.
Questions about Mitchell's ties to children in the community extend beyond the criminal charges. In a 2020 email, Mitchell identified himself as a "Supervising Social Worker" with Adoption Horizons, a now-closed Humboldt County adoption agency that shuttered in 2023. That title has not been independently confirmed, though Adoption Horizons did reference Mitchell on its organizational page while operating. A letter to the editor published under his name in 2013 also addressed foster care challenges in Humboldt County. At least one community member told investigators that a young person they knew had been in Mitchell's care as recently as last year, though that account has not been independently verified.
Mitchell is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
