Eureka police arrested Michael Aubrey, 56, of Eureka, and Derek Aldrich, 37, of Rio Dell, late Friday in an ongoing burglary investigation that has touched both downtown businesses and nearby neighborhoods. Officers took the pair into custody at about 10:45 p.m. on April 11 on charges of burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime and petty theft.

Investigators said the case moved forward after surveillance footage was circulated internally within the Eureka Police Department and posted on social media by the business involved. That footage helped officers identify the suspects, and police thanked the community for helping with the identification process. The arrests suggest investigators were able to connect digital evidence and public tips to a wider burglary pattern playing out across Eureka.

One of the incidents that drew attention involved Sangha Tattoo Studio in the 500 block of F Street. Officers responded there on March 31 after a report of burglary, and police later said multiple windows had been broken. Investigators also said a silver or gray Ford truck was seen near the business. The case was believed to have occurred around 1 a.m., making it one of several late-night property crimes that have kept merchants on alert in the downtown corridor.

A separate burglary report came from the 3500 block of M Street on April 1, adding to concerns about break-ins affecting both commercial and residential areas. Earlier in the year, on Jan. 29, Humboldt County sheriff’s deputies reported a burglary in progress at an apartment on Alpha Street in Eureka and arrested Michael Anthony Offutt, 33, inside without incident. Taken together, the cases show a run of burglary complaints that has reached storefronts, apartments and homes in different parts of the city.

For residents and business owners, the arrests matter because they may help investigators narrow a pattern that has played out across Eureka’s streets and blocks. The case also shows how quickly shared footage, witness tips and coordinated police work can shape an investigation when break-ins begin stacking up in the same community.
