A Humboldt County family can face a prom bill that starts in the hundreds and climbs past $1,000 once the dress, shoes, hair, makeup, tickets and accessories are all added up. In Old Town Eureka, Living Doll Vintage is trying to cut that price to zero for students who would otherwise stay home.

At 239 G Street, the shop is offering free dresses and rentals so students can leave with a full outfit, not just a garment. When it has them, the store also lends or gives away shoes, and staff help students put together a look from head to toe. Owner Adina Loewinsoh said the goal is to remove financial barriers without making students prove their need, turning the fitting into a confidence boost instead of a judgment call.

Loewinsoh said she understands the pressure because she grew up with hand-me-downs and once borrowed a dress for her own prom. That experience sits behind the shop’s approach now: students who cannot afford prom clothes are told to come in and talk, and the store works to help them walk out ready for the night. The focus is on dignity as much as convenience, a small but important shift for a milestone that many teenagers remember for years.

The need is real in Humboldt County, where KidsData said 26,455 residents were ages 0-17 in 2025. The county’s 2021 high school graduation rate was 90.8%, and Eureka Senior High serves grades 9-12 with a 76.4% college and career readiness rate on the California School Dashboard. In a community with that many teens moving through prom and graduation season each year, even one formal outfit can become a budget decision for a family.

Nationally, prom prices show how fast the costs add up. A Visa survey cited average spending of $919 per teen, while another guide put a girl’s prom at about $425 in 2023 for clothing, shoes, hair, makeup and accessories. A separate budget guide put the full total closer to $950 to $1,100 once tickets and extras were included. That is why formalwear drives, boutique-style giveaways and free rental programs have spread across California and beyond.

Sacramento’s Vida de Oro had more than 3,000 new and gently used dresses in stock in 2023, and prom boutiques at schools and community groups have become a common answer to rising costs. The Princess Project says it gives dresses to thousands of teens each season, Operation Prom National Network has provided free prom formal wear since 2005, and The Giving Gown Foundation offers free gowns and accessories to students who otherwise could not attend formal events. In Eureka, Living Doll Vintage is bringing that same idea to 239 G Street, where one free dress can mean one more student makes it to prom.
