Deputies stopped a white Jeep Cherokee at a Eureka gas station on December 13 and discovered a homemade explosive device, methamphetamine, psilocybin mushrooms, a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition. The driver was arrested and booked, and the seizure underscores public safety and legal consequences for possession of weapons and controlled substances in Humboldt County.

Humboldt County deputies stopped a white Jeep Cherokee at a gas station in Eureka on December 13 and during the ensuing search discovered a homemade explosive device inside the vehicle. The sheriff's Explosive Ordnance Detail rendered the device safe at the scene, removing an immediate hazard to the public and responding personnel.
The driver was identified by law enforcement as 37 year old Jesse Eugene Johnson. A passenger in the Jeep was on formal probation with a search clause, which allowed deputies to conduct a probation search of the vehicle that led to the discovery. Following the initial find, deputies conducted a more extensive search and allegedly located approximately 13.61 grams of methamphetamine, approximately 13.16 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, drug paraphernalia, a .22 caliber rifle and .22 caliber ammunition. Authorities determined the explosive device, controlled substances, weapon and ammunition belonged to the driver.
Johnson was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on multiple counts, including possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a destructive device, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a prohibited person, along with related charges. The passenger was released at the scene. The sheriff's office has asked anyone with information about the incident to contact their tip line.
The seizure is significant for Eureka and the wider Humboldt County community because it removed a functioning improvised explosive device from a public location and brought multiple alleged criminal offenses to light. Traffic stops at busy commercial sites such as gas stations can present acute risks when weapons and explosives are involved, and neutralization of the device prevented potential harm to motorists, customers and first responders.
For residents, the incident highlights how probation search conditions can affect vehicle occupants, the legal exposure that comes with possession of controlled substances and prohibited weapons, and the role of local law enforcement units in mitigating hazardous materials and devices. Anyone who witnessed the event or has information is urged to contact the sheriff's tip line so investigators can follow up on leads and address community safety concerns.
