Foster Parent Held to Answer for Murder in 2021 Toddler Death
A Humboldt judge found enough evidence to try Eureka foster mother Ashley Pearce-Pifferini for the 2021 murder of 2-year-old Phoenix Jayden Asti after medical experts rejected the headbanging defense.

Two medical experts told a Humboldt County Superior Court judge that two-year-old Phoenix Jayden Asti's fatal head injuries were consistent with repeated slamming, not the self-inflicted headbanging his foster mother claimed caused them. The testimony proved decisive: Judge Lawrence Killoran held Ashley Pearce-Pifferini to answer on all charges Friday, sending the Eureka woman toward trial for the child's death in November 2021.
Killoran found no basis in the expert testimony to support the defense's headbanging theory. Both witnesses, including a pathologist, described injuries more consistent with inflicted blunt-force trauma than with any behavior the child could have produced himself. The ruling came at the close of a two-day preliminary hearing in Courtroom 7 at Humboldt County Superior Court.
Pearce-Pifferini faces two felony counts: murder and assault on a child causing death. Phoenix died on November 23, 2021, while in her care in Humboldt County. District Attorney Stacey Eads' office investigated the case for nearly three years before filing charges in 2024. At her arraignment that November, Pearce-Pifferini pleaded not guilty; a judge set her bond at $1 million.
The gap between Phoenix's death and the filing of charges has drawn scrutiny from child welfare advocates who have questioned how the case moved through social services in the intervening years. Foster care fatalities carry particular weight in discussions of county oversight, raising questions about how placements are screened and monitored once children are in out-of-home care.
Pearce-Pifferini, who remains presumed innocent, will next face arraignment on the information as the case proceeds toward trial.
