The HCSO began receiving 911 calls just after 5 p.m. reporting a shooting in the area. Deputies, Hoopa Tribal Police, and the California Highway Patrol responded and located the victim at the scene. An ambulance transported the man to a local hospital, but because his injuries were serious, he was later flown by air ambulance to a facility outside the region.

The suspects fled on foot and, as of the latest update, neither they nor the firearms used in the shooting have been found.
The violence reverberated through the surrounding community quickly. The Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District closed temporarily on March 10 as a result of the shooting. Superintendent Jacqueline McCullough sent a message to worried parents announcing the closure, addressing them directly: "Dear Parents and Guardians..."
