Huffman says Trump is pushing species to the brink of extinction

A coalition of conservation interests filed suit Tuesday morning in U.S. District Court over Trump administration changes to the Endangered Species Act, after the administration finalized a rule July 10 that narrowed how federal agencies enforce habitat protections. Jared Huffman, who represents Humboldt County and the rest of California’s North Coast, said the administration is "pushing species to the brink of extinction."

Huffman said the changes would allow special interests to destroy imperiled species’ habitats, and he accused Trump of doing everything in his power to let "billionaire, big industry buddies" ravage habitat. His House office has framed the issue as one that could "hasten endangered species extinction and harm communities," language that hits home on a coast where forests, rivers, estuaries and wetlands shape both daily life and the local economy.

For Humboldt County, the dispute reaches into the Klamath/North Coast bioregion, where county biological-resources materials identify rocky coastline, forested montane areas, fisheries and special-status species as part of the landscape. Those systems matter to fishing families, tribal stewardship, restoration work and county land management, and Huffman’s water-policy materials say climate change has already reduced clean drinking-water supplies and put pressure on food producers, driving iconic fish and wildlife to the brink.

Huffman has made natural resources and climate a defining part of his congressional profile, and he has fought similar battles before, including a House Natural Resources Committee hearing over a GOP-backed proposal to change the Endangered Species Act. The California Department of Justice has also challenged Trump administration rollback regulations in court, showing how quickly a federal habitat rule can become a North Coast legal fight. Huffman’s office said he secured more than $15.3 million in Community Project Funding for Northwest California in fiscal 2025, underscoring how closely environmental policy and local investment remain tied together here.
