The Humboldt County Association of Governments on December 17 released the public draft of the 2026 Regional Transportation Plan, titled Varieties in Rural Options of Mobility or VROOM 2026 to 2046, and invited residents to submit input before the comment period closes Monday, December 29, 2025. The RTP is a 20 year policy document that sets transportation priorities and guides decisions about funding across local streets, trails, bridges, transit, and other infrastructure.

HCAOG officials said the draft identifies more than one billion dollars in infrastructure and program needs across the county. Transit is a major component of the proposal, with estimated long term transit costs near three hundred million dollars. Proposed transit investments in the draft include increased service frequency to every 15 minutes in select corridors, the addition of Sunday service, and fleet modernization.

As a planning document, the RTP will influence which projects are prioritized for limited local funds and which projects are pursued with state and federal grant applications. For Humboldt residents, those decisions affect commute options, pedestrian and bicycle safety, bridge reliability, and equitable access to jobs and services in rural and urban communities across the county. The draft frames those trade offs by quantifying needs and sketching a long term outline of investments, while leaving final choices to elected officials and funding partners.

Public engagement is central to the update. HCAOG has made an online survey and other public comment opportunities available to capture local priorities and to refine project lists and timelines. Civic participation in the comment period can alter which projects move forward, how quickly improvements are scheduled, and how limited funds are distributed across jurisdictions and modes.

With a significant gap between identified needs and available revenue, the RTP will test local and regional capacity to secure grants and coordinate investments. Residents and local officials must weigh expectations against fiscal realities as the plan moves from draft to adoption. The comment window closes December 29, 2025, and the feedback collected in the coming days will shape the countys mobility priorities for the next two decades.
