Jackson Kelly likely throws first PEL no-hitter for Humboldt Crabs

Jackson Kelly likely delivered the Pacific Empire League’s first no-hitter for the Humboldt Crabs, blanking West Coast Kings Baseball in the second game of a doubleheader and giving Arcata Ball Park one of its sharpest summer moments.

The Crabs said so in a Facebook post, and the performance landed at a time when Humboldt was already in the middle of a tight league race. The club was three games back of second place, after a stretch that had seen the Crabs take two from the Potters to move into first place on June 30, sit at 9-3 in league play behind 10-2 Healdsburg on July 4, then drop a series to the league leader before losing a pair at Medford.

The no-hitter fit the kind of night that keeps the Crabs central to Humboldt County summer life. The team has served the community since 1951, and its 2024 program lists an overall record of 2,660 wins, 813 losses and one tie from 1945 through 2024. In Arcata, the ballpark has long been more than a venue for standings math. It is where alumni, families, students and longtime fans gather around a team that has become one of the county’s most familiar sports fixtures.

Kelly’s outing also carried weight because no-hitters are rare by nature, and even rarer in a league still establishing its own history. The Pacific Empire League, which says its mission is to elevate the standard of summer collegiate baseball, welcomed the Crabs beginning in summer 2024 after Humboldt announced the move on Dec. 15, 2023. A first no-hitter in that setting gives the league an immediate benchmark and hands the Crabs a place in its early record book.

The timing matters in another way for Humboldt. The 2025 season also brought attention to renovations at Arcata Ball Park, underscoring how the field remains a living part of the community even as the club builds its next chapter. Kelly’s line, if it holds as the league’s first no-hitter, will stand as both a statistical milestone and a familiar Humboldt summer scene, a night when a game in Arcata became a countywide point of pride.
