Kia Soul crashes off Highway 101 near Orick, driver trapped below road
A Kia Soul went about 150 feet down a steep bank north of Orick, trapping the driver and forcing crews into a technical rescue on Highway 101.

A Kia Soul dropped off Highway 101 near Orick and came to rest about 150 feet down a steep embankment, leaving the driver trapped below the roadway and sending emergency crews into a technical rescue on the North Coast.
The crash was reported just before 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2026, near mile marker 129.70 between Orick and Klamath. First reports from the driver said the vehicle had left the roadway in an area not visible from passing traffic, a detail that helps explain why crews could not simply spot the wreck from the highway and move in immediately. Emergency responders reached the vehicle at about 8:33 a.m. after working their way down the steep bank.
The incident was logged on the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page, which tracks real-time traffic incidents across the region. The driver told dispatchers she was trapped inside the car. Redheaded Blackbelt’s update said the vehicle was roughly 150 feet below the road, underscoring how quickly a routine solo crash can become a difficult rescue when the terrain drops away from the pavement.
Highway 101 is the main travel artery through northern Humboldt County, but the corridor between Orick and Klamath runs through terrain where visibility can vanish in an instant and steep roadside banks can turn a slide-off into an extrication. In those conditions, the emergency is not only the crash itself but the landscape around it: limited sightlines, uneven access, and the need for crews to reach a vehicle that is out of view and far below the road surface.
The April 7 wreck also fits a broader pattern of serious embankment crashes on Highway 101 along the North Coast. A similar incident near Mendocino in February 2026 involved a vehicle over an embankment and an ambulance response, a reminder that this coastal highway can turn a one-car crash into a high-risk rescue with little warning.
