Two separate clusters of gunfire struck the same apartment on the 200 block of Sonoma Street in Eureka on Sunday, police said, prompting an active investigation but resulting in no reported injuries.

“On Sunday, February 1, 2026, at approximately 2:30 a.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department (EPD) were dispatched to the vicinity of Sonoma Street and Lowell Street for a report of gunshots heard. Officers conducted a search of the area but were initially unable to locate any witnesses or evidence related to a shooting,” EPD wrote in a press release reprinted by local outlets. A follow-up search at approximately 1:30 p.m. produced physical evidence. “During that search, evidence of a shooting was located, including spent shell casings and bullet impacts to an apartment in the 200 block of Sonoma Street. There were no injuries reported,” the release said.

Later that evening at about 8:00 p.m., Eureka officers again received multiple calls of gunfire near Sonoma and C streets and found additional evidence consistent with a second shooting in the same vicinity. “Based on evidence collected, it appears that the same apartment that was struck earlier in the day was again targeted during the second shooting,” Lost Coast Outpost reported, summarizing investigators’ findings. LoCO also reported that a detective from EPD’s Criminal Investigation Unit responded to assist patrol officers and that officers contacted occupants of the apartment building during the evening response.

No suspects have been identified, no arrests were reported, and police did not release counts of shell casings or ballistic details. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives process the evidence and seek more information from neighbors and potential witnesses.

Tenants and homeowners on Sonoma Street and adjacent blocks should be aware of increased police activity and the potential for follow-up inquiries. Local law enforcement asks anyone with relevant information to come forward; KRCR noted that “Eureka Police urge anyone with information about this case to contact Detective Sergeant Cory Crnich at (707) 441-4318.”

What happens next will shape neighborhood confidence and police response. Detectives will continue forensic work and canvassing; residents can help by reporting tips, preserving any private video footage from the time windows of about 2:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 8:00 p.m., and staying alert to official updates as the investigation develops.
