Rockslide Cleanup on Route 36 Causes Delays Near Grizzly Creek Redwoods
Caltrans crews clearing a rockslide catchment berm on Route 36 west of Grizzly Creek Redwoods triggered 15-to-30-minute weekday holds, with permanent repairs planned for summer.

Caltrans District 1 crews cleared slide material from a catchment berm on Route 36 west of Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park, imposing weekday traffic holds of 15 to 30 minutes during daylight hours as workers cleaned the berm and performed lane work in the slide area.
The road reopened to one-way traffic west of Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park during the cleanup operation. Caltrans scheduled holds longer than 15 minutes for the maintenance work, though crews made efforts to limit delays to 15 minutes before school start times to reduce impacts on students and bus routes.
Heavy rains that swept through the Northstate triggered the initial slide, with Caltrans District 1 photos from Dec. 28, 2025 documenting the damage to the roadway. By the time cleanup operations were underway, Caltrans reported that slide activity in the area had been minimal following the latest storm system.

Delays of up to 30 minutes were reported on Tuesday, March 3, and Wednesday, March 4, with the one-way traffic configuration in effect west of the park during daylight hours. Caltrans advised drivers to exercise caution while navigating through the slide area.
The current cleanup was not expected to be the final word on Route 36's vulnerability at this location. Caltrans said it hoped to begin constructing more permanent solutions over the summer months and would provide updates as plans developed. The nature and scope of those permanent repairs, including any potential slope stabilization or catchment improvements, had not been detailed as of the agency's most recent statements.
