Two Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide Near Weitchpec, Sheriff's Office Says
Deputies found two people dead inside a Weitchpec home; the sheriff’s office says the scene appears consistent with a murder-suicide and is investigating with Yurok Tribal Police.

Deputies responding at 8:47 p.m. to a residence in the 900 block of Lewis Road in Weitchpec located two people deceased inside the home, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office reported. The sheriff’s office said the preliminary investigation "appears to be consistent with a murder‑suicide," and the Major Crimes Division is leading the probe in cooperation with Yurok Tribal Police.
The identities of the deceased are not being released. "The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin," the sheriff’s office said. Investigators have not released a case number, cause of death, or details about a weapon, and they said there is no further information available for the public at this time. "No additional information will be released at this time. Updates will be released as the investigation continues and as appropriate," the office added.
Weitchpec is a small, close-knit community and the involvement of Yurok Tribal Police underlines the need for culturally sensitive handling of next‑of‑kin notifications and investigative cooperation. For residents, the immediate significance is practical and emotional: investigators are examining the scene, neighbors can expect an increased law enforcement presence while the Major Crimes Division completes its work, and tribal authorities are part of the response.
The Weitchpec incident sits alongside a busy week in county law enforcement activity. Local arrest records for Feb. 6 include Laurie Lynn Arias, arrested by Deputy Mullen at 9:39 a.m. on charges listed as HS 11351 (possession of a controlled substance for sale) and PC 273a(a) (child endangerment under circumstances likely to cause great bodily harm or death). Matthew Gabriel Susmilch was taken into custody at 10:24 a.m. by Deputy Esget and is listed as held on bench and foreign warrants with charges including PC 1203.2(a) and PC 273.5(a). Rufus William Cooke was arrested at 9:50 p.m. by Deputy Nova on a Ramey warrant with charges including PC 273.5(a), PC 273.6(b) and PC 207(a). Other Feb. 6 arrests include Roderick Andrew Brown (CHP Garberville, DUI charges), Travis Danial Nelson (fresh arrest with alleged corporal injury and robbery counts), and Reynaldo Aguilar (CHP, domestic battery and DUI counts).
Humboldt County Correctional Facility booking records printed Feb. 3 include additional entries from earlier in the week, listing Bruce Ashley Nicole and Bartlett Nicole Marie with associated booking numbers, arresting officers and charge codes; the booking-sheet excerpt provided to the public is fragmentary and investigators or jail officials will need to confirm exact mappings and release statuses.
For local residents, the coming days will bring clarifications: investigators will determine cause of death and release identities after next‑of‑kin notifications, and the Major Crimes Division and Yurok Tribal Police will provide updates when appropriate. In the meantime, law enforcement asks the public to respect the privacy of the families involved and to contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office or Yurok Tribal Police with any information relevant to the investigation.
