A pre-dawn crash shut down US-141 in Iron County and stopped traffic on one of the county’s main north-south routes, forcing drivers to reroute between Covington and Corral Road while crews worked the scene near Offerman Road in Hematite Township.

The collision was reported at about 3:35 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 2026, on US-141 near Offerman Road. The Iron County Sheriff’s Office said a southbound 2020 Chevrolet Colorado crossed the centerline and struck a northbound 2021 International box truck.

The 45-year-old Vulcan woman driving the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. A 22-year-old Vulcan woman riding as a passenger in the pickup was taken by ambulance to Aspirus Iron River for treatment. The 55-year-old Felch man driving the box truck was not injured.

Michigan Department of Transportation officials closed northbound and southbound US-141 at Triangle Ranch Rd after the crash, and MDOT’s MiDrive incident map later showed the highway closed between Covington and Corral Road as emergency responders and road crews managed the aftermath. The road reopened later the same day.

For Iron County residents who rely on US-141 to reach nearby towns, the shutdown hit at a time when the corridor is used for early work travel, supply runs and routine trips across the county. Even a short closure on that stretch can force long detours for drivers moving between the Vulcan area, Felch and points north and south.

The sheriff’s office said alcohol was not believed to be a factor, and the crash remained under investigation. Deputies were assisted by the Amasa Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Iron County Search and Rescue, Iron County Road Commission, Baraga County Road Commission, Aspirus EMS, MDOT and Iron County Central Dispatch.

US-141 reopened later Thursday, restoring traffic on a road that serves as a key link for Iron County motorists, but the investigation into the fatal crash continued.
