A free mobile food pantry is headed back to Crystal Falls, giving Iron County households a short window to stock up on groceries at Lakeview Bible Church, 1211 US 2.

The distribution is set for Wednesday, April 22, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Anyone may receive food from the Mobile Food Pantry, and organizers are asking people to bring a name, address, phone number and the number of people in the household. Residents may also pick up food for up to three households in one visit if they bring the same information for each family.

Families are being told to clear out the back seat or trunk before arriving, a sign that volunteers expect to load boxes directly into vehicles and keep the line moving. That matters in Crystal Falls, where the next scheduled food truck is not set to return until June 24.

Feeding America West Michigan says its mobile pantries are free and provide fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein and grains. The food bank says many sites allow proxy pickup for another household, and its mobile pantry model, created in 1998, now accounts for roughly 40% of the food it distributes each year. Its largest mobile pantry can serve up to 600 households, and in 2025 the average mobile pantry distribution was 63% fresh produce, 13.4% dairy, 1% meat and 4.3% other protein.

The Crystal Falls stop also reflects the way food access works in a rural county like Iron County. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the county had 11,709 residents in 2024, with 32.7% age 65 and older, a median household income of $53,614 and 5,354 households. Mean travel time to work was 20.1 minutes, and University of Michigan Poverty Solutions has noted that rural residents often must travel long distances for food, work and health care.

Feeding America West Michigan says it serves neighbors across 40 counties in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula through more than 800 partners. Its Crystal Falls stop is part of a longer-running effort that includes earlier plans for depot stops in both Iron River and Crystal Falls, underscoring how local churches and food banks are filling gaps for households trying to plan ahead.
