A two-year-old Ironwood Township boy was found dead early Thursday, and his mother has since spoken to media while six agencies work alongside the Gogebic County Sheriff's Office to determine how he died.

The sheriff's office confirmed in a press release that deputies were dispatched at approximately 4:40 a.m. Thursday to a report of a dead child in Ironwood Township. After arriving on scene, deputies immediately began assessing the child for signs of life; he was confirmed to be dead.

Lake Rd. and Sunset Rd. were temporarily closed as investigators secured the area. The Michigan State Police were requested to provide further investigative resources, with additional assistance from the MSP Wakefield Post, an MSP Traffic Crash Reconstructionist, the Ironwood Public Safety Department, the Gogebic County Road Commission, the Ironwood Township Fire Department and the Gogebic County Victim Services Unit.

"This is a tragic incident, losing a young member of our community is very hard for all of us," the sheriff's office stated in its release. "We will continue to investigate to determine what happened and will provide further updates to the public when that information is available." The office also confirmed there is no danger to the public.

The boy's mother spoke to Northern News Now with what she characterized as new details about the circumstances surrounding his death. The specifics of her account have not been publicly released by investigators. No cause of death has been confirmed by law enforcement or medical officials, no autopsy results have been announced, and no arrests or charges have been filed.

The inclusion of an MSP Traffic Crash Reconstructionist among the responding agencies indicates investigators are working to establish a precise sequence of events on scene. Families in the area seeking support can reach the Gogebic County Victim Services Unit through the Gogebic County Sheriff's Office; the unit was listed among the agencies directly assisting in the investigation.
