West Iron District Library will keep Iron River readers on a steady summer schedule with an annual reading club that runs through June, July and August. Bonnie Wilgreen will lead each discussion at 10 a.m. in the J. Patrick White conference room, and the public is invited to attend any or all of the sessions.

The lineup gives the club some range. The first discussion is Thursday, June 25, on The Correspondent by Virginia Evans, a novel built around letter writing and long-distance connection. The series continues July 23 with Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, which follows an elderly man whose generosity and curiosity open the door to new friendships. The final meeting is August 20, when readers will turn to The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon, a historical mystery shaped by the life of midwife Martha Ballard and the constraints placed on women in the late 1700s.

For households watching summer spending, the library’s setup makes the club an easy add to the calendar. Multiple copies of each title will be available at the front desk, and the library is located at 116 W. Genesee Street in Iron River. Anyone wanting details can call 906-265-2831. WIDL says it promotes knowledge, understanding and wisdom through educational, cultural and recreational resources and programs, and the summer club fits that mission by giving adults a structured way to keep reading during the months when school routines disappear and family budgets tighten.

The program also builds on a pattern that has already taken root at the library. WIDL used Bonnie Wilgreen as facilitator for its 2023 summer reading club as well, when the discussions met in the same conference room. That year’s broader summer reading program ended with an ice cream party and Book Bucks activity, showing how the library has used seasonal programming to keep people coming back through the doors. The American Library Association describes book discussion groups as a standard adult library service, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says supportive social connections can help people live longer, healthier lives. In Iron River, the summer reading club gives that idea a local address and a clear set of dates.
