Phone calls threatening arrest over missed jury duty have been flooding Island County residents, and the Island County Sheriff's Office wants everyone to know: they're fake.

The sheriff's office issued a warning Friday, March 21, alerting residents to a surge in scam calls in which callers pose as law enforcement or court officials, claiming individuals failed to appear for jury duty and must pay fines immediately to avoid arrest. Officials said these claims are false and part of a broader fraud scheme designed to pressure victims into sending money or sharing sensitive personal information.

The tactics described in the advisory are calculated to create panic. Investigators noted that scammers use intimidation, including explicit threats of arrest, and may "spoof" their phone numbers so that the call appears to originate from a sheriff's office or police department. Spoofing technology falsifies the caller ID displayed on the recipient's phone, lending a false air of legitimacy to the call. In some cases, callers allegedly keep victims on the line while directing them to withdraw cash or purchase gift cards.

The sheriff's office was emphatic that none of this is how legitimate court business works. Residents are not contacted by phone, text, or email to demand payment for missed jury service. Legitimate jury summons are issued by mail, and any follow-up communication is handled through official court channels. Law enforcement agencies also do not request payments via apps such as Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.

Anyone who receives one of these calls is advised to hang up immediately and avoid engaging. To verify whether a jury summons is real, contact the court directly using official contact information. North Whidbey residents can reach Island County Superior Court Administration at 360-679-7361; Camano Island residents may call 360-629-4522, ext. 7361; South Whidbey residents can use the toll-free number 360-321-5111, ext. 7361. Island County District and Municipal Court can be reached at (360) 675-5988.

Those who believe they have been targeted or already victimized should report the incident to local law enforcement. Officials added that public awareness remains a key defense, and residents are encouraged to share information about the scam and stay cautious of any urgent or threatening demands for money over the phone.
